Fire, a destroyed building, rescuers amidst the rubble, and a helicopter in a smoke-filled sky—artist Anastasiia Tuka has captured the various facets of the State Emergency Service’s (SES) work in a single composition. On September 17 — Rescuer's Day — Ukrposhta unveiled the "Heroic Professions: Brave Enough to Save" stamp issue, dedicated to those who work at the sites of Russian strikes and save lives while facing the threat of repeated attacks.

At the center of the stamp stands a firefighter-rescuer battling the flames, surrounded by the operations of various SES units. Search-and-rescue teams clear debris and look for survivors; sappers and pyrotechnicians neutralize mines, unexploded ordnance, and missile remnants; and high-altitude specialists and aviation crews carry out their duties. Alongside them, SES psychologists assist victims, evacuees, and those awaiting news of their loved ones. Above the entire scene, a helicopter flies through the smoke-filled sky.

This stamp is more than just a postal release; it is a token of gratitude to the people who work daily in dangerous conditions, doing everything possible to save lives. While the stamp depicts various rescue professions, they share a single mission: to bravely save lives.

Working amidst the flames begins with carrying dozens of extra kilograms of gear. A firefighter-rescuer's basic gear weighs around 30 kg: breathing apparatus, protective clothing, specialized boots, a helmet, a belt, gloves, and an axe. When operating at the sites of Russian strikes, approximately 16.5 kg of body armor is added to this load. Including items such as fire hoses, a crowbar, a cut-off saw, hydraulic tools, or a stretcher, the total load carried by a single rescuer can exceed 60 kg.

In late August alone, following a Russian attack on the village of Myla in the Bucha district, over 300 rescuers and explosive ordnance disposal specialists worked around the clock at the impact site. During the full-scale war, a significant portion of the State Emergency Service's work begins immediately after Russian attacks and often continues under the threat of a follow-up strike.

Each postage stamp bears the "U" denomination, with a print run of 360,000 copies. Ukrposhta has also traditionally released a "First Day" cover and an illustrated postcard.

On 17 September, Ukraine celebrates Rescuer’s Day — a professional holiday honouring the courage and dedication of those who have made it their mission to save human lives in the most desperate moments.

For Ukrainian rescuers, the war has become a test that pushes human limits to the very edge. Russian troops treacherously hunt them down whilst they are clearing up the aftermath of horrific enemy shelling, but they do not retreat. Whether in sweltering heat or freezing cold, day or night — emergency responders remain at the scene until the very end, fighting to save every life.

They are the first to go where others flee. Unarmed, but with an iron will in their hearts, they clear the rubble, extinguish the flames and, step by step, rid their homeland of deadly traps. Where the enemy brings destruction and darkness, the rescuers restore light and a chance for the future to the people.

Their strength lies in their quiet fortitude, exceptional professionalism and willingness to risk their own lives for the sake of others.

The Heroic Professions. Brave Enough to Save’ postage stamp issue is dedicated to all of Ukraine’s rescuers, who keep hope alive and give the gift of life come what may.

On September 17, 2026, the "Brave to Save" postage stamp was issued and deemed valid for the payment of postal services at all post offices.
