On March 14, Ukrposhta officially put into circulation a new postage stamp “City of Heroes. Mariupol”, dedicated to the anniversary of the tragedy in the city of Mariupol. This issue continues the series of stamps honoring heroic cities of Ukraine that demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience in the fight for independence.

Mariupol is a city that has become a symbol of invincibility, having received the honorary title “Hero City of Ukraine”, established by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on March 6, 2022. Since May 2022, the city has been under temporary occupation, but its spirit remains unshakable.

A feature of this issue is the unique coating of the stamps with particles of steel produced at the Azovstal plant of the Metinvest Group in Mariupol. After the start of full-scale aggression by the Russian Federation, Azovstal turned from a plant into a fortress, which became the last line of defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the city. The courage, bravery and indomitability of the defenders of Mariupol became an example for millions of Ukrainians, and the last steel from Azovstal became a symbol for the country. It was this steel from the last production of the Azovstal workshop, manufactured before the start of the aggressor's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, that became an addition to the unique "steel" brand. And thanks to the cooperation of Ukrposhta with the world's leading printing services company Cartor Security Printers (France), it became possible to apply steel to postal miniatures using thermography technology.

The main image of the Ukrposhta postal issue "City of Heroes. Mariupol" is the building of the Drama Theater, where about a thousand civilians were hiding from shelling, and on which on March 16, 2022, the Russian invaders dropped two super-powerful air bombs. Artist of stamp Oleg Shuplyak depicted the theater building before and after the Russian strike, as a reminder of the grave crime of the occupiers against a peaceful Ukrainian city. In addition to the postage stamp, along with the issue, Ukrposhta also presented an art envelope “First Day” and a card by Viktoriya Anikienko, which also depicted the destroyed building of the Mariupol Drama Theater and a little girl next to it holding a white rabbit in her arms. This image is also very symbolic, because right next to the destroyed theater building, the entire length of the square was marked “CHILDREN” (in Russian), indicating that children were in the building. But this inscription did not stop the Russians. The postal issue also included an unmarked art envelope, which depicts a photograph of the Mariupol artist Yevhen Sosnovsky. The inscription on the photo is very eloquent and does not require special interpretation, because it contains the following words: “Let the Kremlin animal understand that Mariupol is Ukraine”.

The circulation of the postage stamp “City of Heroes. Mariupol” is 400 000 copies, the denomination is M (corresponds to the tariff for sending a domestic ordinary letter without declared value weighing over 50 grams up to 250 grams inclusive and a postcard). In addition, Ukrposhta issued 25 000 copies of the “First Day” envelope, 25 000 art cards, 25 000 art envelopes. The artist of the stamp is Oleg Shuplyak; the artist of the “First Day” envelope and the card is Viktoriya Anikienko, the photo on the unmarked art envelope is Yevhen Sosnovsky.

In honor of the victims of the terrorist attack and all those who selflessly defended the city from the invaders, Ukrposhta presents the postal issue "City of Heroes. Mariupol".

The postage stamps of the issue are covered with particles of steel manufactured at the Azovstal metallurgical plant, which has become a real outpost of the city since the beginning of the large-scale war. The thermography technology on Ukrainian postage stamps was used for the first time, which became possible thanks to the cooperation of Ukrposhta with the world's leading printing services company Cartor Security Printers (France).

14.03.2025 the postage stamp "City of Heroes. Mariupol" is put into circulation and is considered valid for payment of postal services in all postal offices.

Mariupol” as a sign of honoring the memory of those who selflessly defended the city from the occupiers and those tens of thousands of Mariupol residents who became victims of the most brutal crimes of the Russians. The postage stamps of the issue are covered with particles of steel produced at the Azovstal steelworks, which since the beginning of the large-scale war has become a real outpost of the city.

In the spring of 2022, the entire civilized world shuddered from terrible events, and the name of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol appeared on the front pages of all world media. The Russians were insidiously destroying the city, delivering devastating blows from the sea, land, and sky. Heroically and selflessly, Ukrainian defenders defended the city and the Azovstal plant, which became a refuge for thousands of peaceful Mariupol residents, wounded Ukrainian fighters, and was the last zone in the city controlled by Ukraine.

Later, the world community witnessed ruthless terrorist attacks when enemy Russian air bombs hit the Mariupol maternity hospital, where many pregnant women, babies, and medical workers were staying. On March 16, 2022, the Russian invaders dropped two super-powerful air bombs on the building of the Drama Theater in Mariupol, where about a thousand civilians, including women and children, were hiding from the shelling. A warning sign “CHILDREN” was written in large letters on the square in front of the theater, but this did not stop the Russian killers. As a result of the strikes, about 600 people died under the rubble of the building.

The Drama Theater building became the main image of the new Ukrposhta postal issue “City of Heroes. Mariupol”. The theater has always been the heart of Mariupol and the postage stamp recreates the building after the Russian attack, and its mirror image reminds us of what the theater was like before the war – a place for holidays, concerts, and the cultural life of the city.
