Ukrposhta continues a series of postal issues dedicated to heroic cities of Ukraine that showed extraordinary courage and resilience in the fight for freedom. On February 18, Ukrposhta issued a postage stamp “Cities of Heroes. Volnovakha”, dedicated to a small city in the Donetsk region.

The war affected Volnovakha back in May 2014.

The city of Volnovakha, located on one of the highest points of the Azov Upland, was one of the first to be attacked by the Russian invaders on February 24, 2022. In February and March, heavy fighting took place for the city, which is an important railway junction on the Mariupol-Donetsk and Mariupol-Zaporizhzhia lines. The residents of Volnovakha, who in 2016 distinguished themselves by creating a chain of unity of more than two thousand citizens called “Donbas is Ukraine,” together with Ukrainian defenders, bravely resisted the enemy. However, during the two weeks of fierce fighting and air strikes, the city was almost completely destroyed, and local residents were forced to evacuate.

Since March 11, 2022, Volnovakha has been under Russian occupation.

The "Hero City of Ukraine" is an honorary distinction established by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on March 6, 2022 to commemorate the feat, mass heroism, and resilience of citizens shown in defending their cities from Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine. Volnovakha was one of the first to receive this high award, along with Gostomel, Kharkiv, Mariupol, and other cities that became outposts of the struggle.

The postage stamp "Cities of Heroes. Volnovakha" depicts a steam locomotive rushing through endless fields of sunflowers, leaving a burning city behind. This is not just an illustration - it is the history of Volnovakha, captured in symbols. The railway is the heart of the city, which was built as an important transport hub in 1881. The train symbolizes not only the strategic role of the city, but also the evacuation of residents during the fighting, which was a salvation for many people.

The artistic card for the postal issue “City of Heroes. Volnovakha” contains the slogan ”I am Volnovakha. Je suis Volnovakha”, which became famous in 2015 after a terrorist attack near the city, when the occupiers shot Ukrainian soldiers and a passenger bus at a checkpoint, killing defenders and civilians.

 We are waiting for Ukrainian Volnovakha to return home!

According to the author of the stamp, military artist Dante, he created these works with a sense of pain and pride to show the strength of the spirit of Volnovakha: in every stroke there is a struggle, in every detail there is memory, and in every symbol there is faith that life and freedom will always win.

The circulation of the stamp is 840 000 copies, the denomination is U (corresponds to the tariff for sending an internal simple letter without declared value weighing up to 50 grams and a postcard). In addition, 25 000 copies of the “First Day” envelope and 20 000 art cards were issued.

Recall that Ukrposhta launched a series of postal issues dedicated to the heroic cities of the country in December 2022 with the issue “Kherson is Ukraine!”. In 2023, it was continued by the postal block “We will not forget! We will not forgive! Bucha. Irpin. Gostomel”, the issue “Cities of Heroes. Kharkiv Region”, dedicated to the cities of Heroes: Balakliya, Izyum, Kupyansk and Kharkiv, the stamp “Cities of Heroes. Okhtyrka”, the postal block “Cities of Heroes. Chernihiv Region” and a stamp dedicated to the unconquered city of shipbuilders – “Cities of Heroes. Mykolaiv”.
